Surreal. The crater is huge, with very steep sides. Only a small part of the ring road was open, on the south by the lodge and the visitor center; still many, many feet of snow. The sides are steep, treacherous, snow-covered slides! The lodge has a great vantage point, and is attractive in its rusticness inside. Wizard Island sits way below. The drive out is on the long side, and gains a lot of elevation, but is also interesting: box canyon on the west, volcanic formations on the east.
