On the morning of Wednesday, May 5th (Cinco de Mayo), San Antonio Missions National Historical Park served as the backdrop for Univisión’s popular national morning show “Despierta América.” The national show was broadcast live from the park with Mission San José serving as a backdrop.
Ranger Robert Espinosa was a featured guest in several segments discussing the many historic features of the park, San Antonio, and Spanish colonial contributions to American history.
Over 500 people showed up to witness the live program, making Wednesday’s show the largest live audience to ever attend a “Despierta América” broadcast. The live broadcast also featured mariachi performers, singers, dancers, and performances by international recording and film star Pedro Fernandez.
Univision is the largest Spanish language television network in the United States and the fifth largest network, overall, in the country. This was a wonderful opportunity to showcase NPS efforts to preserve and interpret our nation’s Hispanic heritage to primarily Hispanic audiences.
