On Saturday, February 6th, Canaveral National Seashore played host to the inaugural “Run with the Rangers” event.
This 5k run/walk and Junior Ranger fun run was sponsored by the Coronado Beach Elementary School PTA. There were 331 runners and walkers from all over the central Florida, including students from 17 area schools who participated.
The focus of the PTA was to get families “sweating for their schools” and to get them out into their national park.
The scenic course brought the runners around the historic Eldora Loop Road and out along the ocean road. The seashore sponsored the Junior Ranger fun run, which took some 40 to 50 K through 6th grade students on an activity filled course through a hammock trail to draw and identify native plants. They learned about seashells that drift with the tides and what the arrowhead symbolizes to the National Park Service.
With the huge turnout and positive feedback from the runners, there are hopes this will become an annual event. On the heels of First Lady, Michelle Obama’s plan to fight childhood obesity, Canaveral National Seashore took a first step with 189 of the runner/walkers being under the age of 18.
