The Chesapeake Bay Program has launched BayBackpack.com, an online resource for teachers and environmental educators to engage students in hands-on learning about the Chesapeake Bay and its local waterways. The Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Water Trails Network, managed by the National Park Service's Chesapeake Bay Office (CBO), is a key partner in the broader Bay Program, which includes local, state and federal agencies such as NOAA and EPA. NPS-CBO Web Administrator, Mike Land, played a principal role in the design and production of the innovative BayBackpack website.
Bay Backpack provides educators with resources to give their students a Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience (MWEE) - defined as an extensive project that allows students to gain a deep understanding of environmental issues in the region. Bay Program partners work with state and local education departments to ensure that all students in the watershed receive three MWEEs before they graduate from high school.
