Park Receives Several Awards For Bicentennial Commemorations

Lincoln Home National Historic Site

National Park News

Lincoln Home National Historic Site has received several national and international awards for its commemoration of the 2009 Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial.

The National Association for Interpretation recognized Lincoln Home NHS in the interpretive media awards competition at a November 2009 national workshop in Hartford, Connecticut. The historic site’s official handbook, “Abraham Lincoln: A Living Legacy,” received third place in the Small Book category, and the new park bicentennial film, “Abraham Lincoln: A Journey to Greatness,” which debuted in February 2009, received first place in the long video category.

This movie also received two prestigious film industry awards, including a 2009 Aurora Award “Platinum Best of Show,” recognizing the international significance of the film, and a 2009 Silver Telly Award.

The park and its Eastern National Museum Shop were also presented with the esteemed Charles S. Marshall Unit Award from Eastern National for their “outstanding agency teamwork in promoting the public’s understanding and support of America’s national parks.” Working together, the Museum Shop and national historic site staff enhanced visitor services and developed many new sales products. The year 2009 was the museum shop’s best year in sales.

Celebrating the 200th birthday of one of America’s most important historical figures was no small feat, but employees from all divisions – administration, curatorial, maintenance, and interpretation – came together with the Eastern National staff to host nearly 500,000 visitors throughout the year.

While the awards given to Lincoln Home NHS were appreciated, it was the approval of the visitors that made 2009 a success.
