French Air Force Salutes the Victory at Yorktown

Colonial National Historical Park

National Park News

To honor the 228th anniversary of the American and French victory at Yorktown, the Patrouille Aerobatique de France, the precision aerobatic team of the French Air Force, performed a flyover of the Yorktown Battlefield unit of Colonial National Historical Park on October 8.  The nine-ship flyover, which consisted of four passes in a variety of formations and trailing red, white and blue smoke, was arranged “due to the friendship and alliance between France and America forged on the battlefield of Yorktown,” according to Nicole Yancey, a representative for the French consulate in Virginia.  "Yorktown has been very special in Franco-American relationships," she said. "France has always looked at Yorktown as the cradle of Franco-American relations."

Activities commemorating the nine-day bombardment that culminated in the surrender of the British forces to the combined American and French army and resulted in the final winning of American independence, continue through October 19, the 228th anniversary of the British surrender.  On the anniversary, a parade, patriotic ceremonies and tactical demonstrations by the Commander-in-Chief’s Guard and the Old Guard Fife & Drum Corps at the park cap three-days of encampments, interpretive programs and commemorative activities.  For further information and a full schedule of events, follow the link below.
