Storm Damages Recreational Vehicles

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

National Park News

A thunderstorm with high winds, rain and hail passed through the park around 9:30 p.m. on July 27th. A large tree about 18 inches in diameter was uprooted and fell across two large camping trailers at Elkmont campground. One of the trailers was totally destroyed when the tree trunk fell across it, smashing the rear of the trailer down the frame in the rear bedroom section where four children normally slept. The second trailer sustained only minor damage from the top branches of the tree. Luckily, both families were shopping in Gatlinburg at the time and there were no injuries in the incident.  The tree appeared to be healthy, and showed no obvious signs of stress.
