Park Recognizes Volunteers

Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial

National Park News

With many area schools getting back in session, a very busy summer season at Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial has begun to wind down.  It has been a year of higher than normal visitation and increased attention largely due to the Lincoln bicentennial.

Assisting the park staff all through the season has been a small, but very loyal, cadre of park volunteers.  At a recent staff luncheon, Acting Superintendent Mike Capps officially recognized their contributions and formally thanked them for their service to the National Park Service.  Among those recognized were Lauren Alexander, who helped with several administrative functions this summer; Jerry Layton, who worked with his daughter seasonal park guide Ashley, at the living historical farm; and Martha Heeke, who provided invaluable assistance at the Memorial Visitor Center.  Martha was especially recognized for her achievement of having put in over 500 hours of volunteer service to the park over the past several years.  She now has the distinction of being the park’s longest serving volunteer.  For her accomplishment she was presented with a special certificate and will receive an annual interagency pass.  Capps expressed his official and personal appreciation to each of the volunteers for their assistance in the operations of Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial.
