Servicewide Migratory Wildlife Survey Now Open

National Park News

The Natural Resource Program Center and the Wildlife Conservation Society are collaborating on a Servicewide, web-based survey on migratory wildlife in parks. Many wildlife species residing within National Park Service lands migrate beyond the boundaries of parks during a portion of their life cycles or use park lands as migration routes. In an effort to deepen our understanding of migratory wildlife, we invite NPS staff to share your knowledge and opinions on migratory species, migration routes, and the conservation requirements needed to protect them. All wildlife biologists, biological technicians, resource management staff, and others who are knowledgeable about wildlife are encouraged to complete the survey.

The survey is currently available at the following web address: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=bTOlcbX89CPAZSqFVDVBmw_3d_3d  and is also available on the BRMD intranet homepage. The survey should take under 25 minutes to complete.  Please respond by September 4th.

Survey results will help coordinate a strategic approach to assessing the number of species, critical habitat, and linkages for species that spend short and long periods of time within the boundaries of our parks.  They also will be used to determine areas of focus for a workshop, and will have the immediate benefit of helping NPS improve collaboration with state, federal, and non-government partners.  Results will be summarized in a final report and distributed servicewide no later than October.

For a copy of the full memo for service distribution please http://www1.nrintra.nps.gov/brmd/Documents/Wildlife%20Survey%20Memo8.pdf

If you have questions about the survey or would like to request a paper copy, please contact Elaine Leslie, deputy chief of operations, Biological Resource Management Division, Elaine_Leslie@nps.gov or 970-267-2135
