On the afternoon of June 25th, county dispatch advised rangers Jeff Goad and Dave Carter that several people were caught in the surf 100 to 200 feet from shore and in need of assistance. As rangers and local emergency service personnel were responding, dispatch advised that an older man had been removed from the water and that CPR was in progress. Dare County EMS and rangers took over CPR and advanced medical care when they arrived; the man was then taken to a hospital, where he expired. While this incident was in progress, a Hatteras Island volunteer rescue swimmer heard a cry for help and rescued a a confused and disorientated young man who was gasping for breath. He was taken to Outer Banks Hospital in Nags Head.
