NPS Career Opportunities Session Held

National Park News

On Monday June 22nd, National Capital Region partnered with the District of Columbia Summer Youth Employment Program (DCSYEP) to inspire youths to follow a career path within the NPS.

The orientation session began a nine-week summer program where young people employed through the DCSYEP will learn, work and explore in three national parks – National Capital Parks-East, National Mall & Memorial Parks, and Rock Creek Park.  Also attending were Youth Conservation Corps team members and Student Conservation Association interns from parks throughout the region. The youth workers were welcomed by National Capital Regional Director Peggy O’Dell, National Capital Parks - East Superintendent Gayle Hazelwood, National Capital Parks –East Chief of Interpretation Kirsten Talken-Spaulding, and DOI Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy, Management and Budget Robert G. Stanton.

Stanton shared his commitment to have every bureau within the Department of Interior set up a Youth Conservation Corps program and encouraged  youth of all backgrounds to know that there is a place for them within the Department of Interior. He also reminded students to raise questions with park rangers about career preparation.

Urging students not to be shy when inquiring about their future, Stanton said, “Protect the treasures that belong to you! The Lincoln Memorial is yours. Always rest assured that the parks are yours to visit and to use.” He explained that some of the parks represented a time of great struggle for America, and that we must work together to preserve the parks for children yet to come.

The audience appeared to be intrigued and enthused by all of the program’s guest speakers, who tirelessly demonstrated the rewards of combining both work and play in national parks.
