2009 Best Places To Work Rankings Now Out

National Park News

The "Best Places to Work" rankings for 2009 are now available online at http://data.bestplacestowork.org/bptw/index .   This fourth edition in the ongoing series of federal agency rankings is the most comprehensive and authoritative rating and analysis of employee satisfaction and commitment in the federal government.

To access the National Park Service ratings, click on the “Agency Subcomponents” tab and then click on the “see all” link displayed under the 10 highest ranked agency subcomponents (directly beneath the “#10 – Region 3, Philadelphia (EPA).”

This year, the NPS ranks 160th out of 216 federal bureaus in workplace satisfaction.  The overall index score for the NPS increased by 2.7% compared to the 2007 rankings, but since many other agencies also increased their scores, our relative ranking did not change.  In addition to an overall ranking, a number of different listings are available on the website that display agencies ranked in specific categories, as well as demographic information and a Most Improved ranking.

Results from the Federal Human Capital Survey (FHCS), conducted every other year, serve as the basis for Best Places to Work.  The complete survey results for NPS will be posted to the Workforce Management website on InsideNPS.  Survey results for each region, plus USPP, DSC, and HFC have been made available to each Regional/Center Director and the USPP Chief and to their regional HR Manager for further analysis at the regional/center level if desired.

Acknowledging that the overall NPS ranking has not improved, the National Leadership Council has voiced its commitment to organizational improvement. A number of initiatives in the learning and development arena were initiated in 2008 in response to the 2007 ranking.  We will continue to focus on carrying these through to completion, as well as identify further workplace enrichment initiatives in the coming months.  Emphasis in areas such as communication, supervisory skills development, and work-life flexibilities will support the NPS goal of becoming a best place to work in the Federal Government.  Watch for information about these efforts in coming weeks.
