Major renovation and restoration work at Harry S Truman National Historic Site will close the centerpiece of the site, the Truman Home, to public tours beginning August 3rd. The closure is expected to last through next spring.
New heating, ventilation, and cooling (HVAC) and fire suppression systems will be installed in the historic home, and plaster will be repaired and stabilized. Historic wallpaper currently being removed from the dining room and an upstairs bedroom will be cleaned, repaired, and reinstalled at the end of the project.
The park visitor center will remain open during the course of the project -- visitors may view an orientation film about Harry Truman and his life in Independence; see exhibits featuring Truman family treasures; and view photos of the inside of the Truman Home and the ongoing conservation work. NPS staff will conduct periodic walking tours of the Harry S Truman National Historic Landmark District (HLD).
Three cell-phone tours of the Truman Farm Home in Grandview, Missouri, and Truman HLD remain available during the construction period. In addition, the Truman Farm Home, currently open only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, will offer extended hours, opening daily for public tours beginning August 3rd and concluding on October 12th, when the home closes for the winter.
