Celebrate National Trails Day at Cowpens National Battlefield Saturday, June 6, 2009
Do you enjoy spending time in the great outdoors? Going for walks, watching, and listening to nature? Then Saturday, June 6, 2009 is a day for you! Come join us for an informative walk along the two-mile hiking trail at Cowpens National Battlefield. Two walks will be given that day: a morning walk at 9:00 a.m. and an afternoon walk at 3:00 p.m. The morning walk will focus on basic birding techniques as we view resident birds that live in the Park and migrants that are just passing through. The afternoon walk will focus on basic tree identification as we learn about trees that grow in the Park.
The informative walks will be geared towards beginner level naturalists (age 12+), but all levels of expertise are invited to attend. Space is limited and we ask that you please RSVP by 5pm on Friday, June 5 by calling the Park at (864) 461-2828. The walks will last approximately one hour. Please arrive promptly on time, meeting at the trailhead located on the picnic area loop. Ample parking is available.
Please remember to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress appropriately for changing weather conditions. Water is a must! Please bring an adequate amount of water for yourself as we will be out in the summer heatâhats are a good idea too. Also, we highly recommended bringing binoculars for bird viewing. You may also want to bring along related field guides on birds and trees, however, pamphlets containing speciesâ check lists will be provided.
To RSVP or obtain further information, please call Cowpens National Battlefield at (864) 461-2828. Cowpens National Battlefield is located near Chesnee, SC at the intersection of SC Hwy 110 and 11. For more information about the Park, please visit our website at www.nps.gov/cowp.
National Trails Day (NTD) was started in 1993 and takes place the first Saturday every June. NTD was established to promote awareness and appreciation for trails throughout America. The goal of the program is to form a nationwide network of trails that will link together the Nationâs greenways and National Parks.
