Celebrate National Junior Ranger Day at Cowpens National Battlefield
On Saturday, April 25, 2009, Cowpens National Battlefield will celebrate National Junior Ranger Day. Between 10:00 â 4:00, children aged 6 years and older can pick up a free Junior Ranger Activity Booklet at the park Visitor Center, complete the age-appropriate activities and do an activity such as quill pen writing with park volunteers at the historic Scruggs House. Children who finish the booklet will receive a Cowpens Junior Ranger badge. If they return to the visitor center with the completed booklet and show the park staff the skill that they learned, they will also receive a special Junior Ranger Day patch or button, and certificate.
The Junior Ranger program is designed to have children and adults work together to learn more about the history and environment in our national parks. At Cowpens National Battlefield children receive a free 26-page booklet and a cow-pencil to use to complete the activities with their parents. Participants can choose activities like a scavenger hunt, word search, and battlefield bingo. It only takes about 1½ - 2 hours to complete the program, and in the end, they will be rewarded with a Junior Ranger Badge at the Visitor Center. The booklet is available every day, but only Junior Rangers who complete the program on April 25, 2009 will also receive a special certificate and patch.
Cowpens National Battlefield protects and preserves the historic Revolutionary War Battlefield where American General Daniel Morgan defeated the British forces led by Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton on January 17, 1781. There is no admission charged for the park and all activities are free. The park is located 3 miles east of Chesnee, SC and 10 miles west of Gaffney, SC on SC Highway 11. Visitor Center hours are 9:00 a.m. â 5:00 p.m. daily, closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Days.
