Throughout the National Park Service, from Atlanta to Alaska, interpreters are joining a new credentialing network that supports students using online learning tools. More than 100 experienced interpreters have already chosen to become local registered coaches for the interpretive development programâs new distance learning platform.
The distance learning platform, launched in 2005, offers online training in five of the ten benchmark interpretive modules (itâs located at www.interptraining.org). Each competency-based course offers two study options â basic certificate (study on your own) and an advanced certificate (study with a coach). Those students who want to achieve an advanced certificate need a registered coach to evaluate their assignments and provide professional guidance. Any experienced interpreter, especially those with coaching and auditing responsibilities, may apply to become a registered coach.
To become a registered coach for the distance learning platform, an interpreter must apply for and be accepted to one of the registered coach classroom courses. Successful applicants must complete a three part prerequisite program before attending the classroom training.
This spring, nine registered coach courses are being conducted throughout the countryâs seven regions. So far, six courses have been held, generating many new registered coaches to support on-line learning efforts - over 200 by the end of this fiscal year. Six more classes are scheduled for this coming summer and fall.
Students seeking a registered coach to help them achieve an advanced certificate should email project manager, Katie Bliss at Katie_Bliss@nps.gov.
