On November 4th, the barrel of an NPS-owned Remington 870 12-gauge shotgun exploded during firearms training at Colonial NHP, causing a laceration to the hand of the ranger firing the shotgun. That shotgun and ammunition from the same lot number used that day were shipped to FLETC, where the investigation continued in an effort to determine if the accident was related to the shotgun, the ammunition, or a combination of the two.
On January 9th, a final follow-up on the shotgun barrel explosion was sent to all parks. Included in the follow-up were copies of the two letters written by Remington Arms Company regarding their determination of the cause of damage to the shotgun barrel.
