Winter 2009 NRPC Newsletter Posted

The winter edition of Earth, Wind and Water, the Natural Resource Program Center newsletter, has been posted to the web and is now available. This issue includes:

NPS natural resource leadership coalesces around major areas of emphasis – The Natural Resource Stewardship and Science Directorate (NRSS) management team and the Natural Resource Advisory Group met in 2008 to discuss emerging resource issues and opportunities for NRSS to advance park protection. Read about the NRSS’s focus on helping park managers respond to challenges such as protecting ocean and coastal resources, adapting to climate change, and managing increasingly fragmented habitats. 

Karst Inventory: Practiced in parks with partners, applied abroad – Andrea Croskrey, physical scientist-geologist, has surveyed caves at Wind Cave, Mammoth Cave, and Carlsbad Caverns National Park. In this edition of Earth, Wind, and Water she shares her experiences documenting cave resources through volunteer projects with the Hong Meigui Cave Exploration Society and the USFS through Tongass Cave Project.

NRPC News in Brief – The news in brief features the Biological Resource Management Division’s involvement in developing DOI’s bison conservation initiative, the Geologic Resource Division’s assistance to Arches National Park in assessing the geologic stability and management options after the collapse of the Wall Arch, and the Water Resources Division’s support of scientific assessments at Yellowstone National Park to identify the potential for a well on adjacent property to impact park thermal features.
