As Inauguration Day approaches, Americans are asking questions about presidential swearing-in ceremonies of the past. Where was George Washingtonâs second inauguration? Who was the first president to be inaugurated at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.? Why was Theodore Rooseveltâs first inauguration held in Buffalo, New York?
They can learn about the inaugurations, lives, and contributions of all American presidents in a special National Park Service online travel itinerary entitled âAmerican Presidents.â
âHistory comes alive at the birthplaces, homes, and memorials of American presidents across the country,â said Director Bomar. âI hope every citizen will visit a presidential site this year.â

The National Park Serviceâs Heritage Education Services produced the itinerary in partnership with the National Park Service Office of Tourism, the White House Historical Association, and the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers. Staff from many units of the National Park System and the other sites included in the itinerary, state historic preservation offices, and others assisted in content development and provided images, making the itinerary a true collaborative effort.
As for the questions raised above, here are the answers: Congress Hall in Independence National Historical Park; Thomas Jefferson; President McKinley was assassinated in that city.
