New Fire Management Facility Opened

Big Thicket National Preserve

National Park News

Three years of planning and construction for a new fire management facility culminated in a grand opening ceremony of the building on Monday, December 15th.

In January, 2006, funds from the Service’s fire management program were made available for the construction of a permanent fire management facility for Big Thicket. A citizens’ group was formed in Tyler County to address the need for land for the facility. Lonnie and Jill Grissom of Woodville donated six acres of land just south of Woodville for the project. Construction began last January.

Superintendent Todd Brindle welcomed attendees at the ceremony, and Congressman Kevin Brady gave the keynote speech.
