Restoration Of Historic Malus-Beauregard Completed

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve

National Park News

Three years of painstaking work have restored the historic Malus-Beauregard House to its former glory. The house is located at Chalmette Battlefield, site of the Battle of New Orleans in 1815, one of six sites of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. On Saturday and Sunday, December 13-14, 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., a grand reopening and open house is scheduled at the house. National Park Service experts worked with contractors to make sure that restoration projects were as close as possible to original work. Some work was scheduled before Hurricane Katrina flooded the house in August 2005, but storm damage required restoration literally from top to bottom. Built around 1833, the house was occupied by several prominent Louisiana families. For the grand reopening, rooms will be furnished and decorated for the holidays in styles appropriate to the early 1800s and living history experts in period dress will represent the families who lived in the house.
