New Handbook On American Revolution Published

National Park News

The newly issued National Park Service handbook on the American Revolution tells the sweeping story of the American Revolution and puts in context the events and people from more than thirty parks in the Northeast, Southeast, Midwest, and National Capital Regions.

“It is my hope that this handbook becomes a new model for the Park Service,” said Director Bomar. “This handbook focuses on multiple sites and will inspire readers to visit the many parks that tell the story of the American Revolution.”

Published by Eastern National, the book underscores the National Park Service role in preserving and interpreting the Revolution. The handbook also contains an introduction by President Jimmy Carter and essays by historians Pauline Maier, Don Higginbotham, Gary B. Nash, Gordon Wood, and Charlene Mires.

A product of the 225th anniversary of the American Revolution, the handbook is a grassroots effort by the Southeast Region, the Northeast Region, along with regional office staff.

“The book makes a strong statement about the NPS role in preservation. The illustrations showcase not only our landscapes but also the objects and images from park collections,” said Dennis Reidenbach, regional director for Northeast Region.

David Vela, regional director for Southeast Region, also praised the publication.

“The images and features make the book compelling. They show the rich diversity of the people who experienced the Revolution and draws connections to make it relevant to the experiences of current audiences,” he said.
