Superintendent Gerard Baker has launched an assistance project in coordination with state and tribal emergency management offices, providing firewood for those in need of heat in the Wanblee area following a major blizzard that knocked out power throughout the region.
âIt is important for the National Park Service to lend a hand to its state and tribal partners and neighbors by providing any assistance we can during this state of emergency,â said Baker. âWe created a firewood assistance program as a means of reducing fuel loads (a critical component of the fire management plan), including slash piles and standing hazard trees in the park boundaries, developing a valuable source of firewood. Through this program we were able to provide additional assistance in 2004, 2005 and 2006 under similar circumstances. Itâs really a win-win scenario for all â it helps the National Park Service effectively and efficiently manage our natural resources, and helps provide a heat source to our area partners and neighbors in need.â
NPS staff delivered a load of firewood last Tuesday to the Crazy Horse School in Wanblee. Additional loads were delivered on Thursday. The tribal emergency management office facilitates distribution of the firewood to individuals and families in need.
