Overturned Tanker Truck Spills Fuel In Park

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

National Park News

The driver of a BP tanker carrying 3,800 gallons of diesel fuel lost control of his truck on Steels Corner Road on the afternoon of October 31st. The truck rolled over and landed on park property by the intersection of the Akron-Peninsula and Steels Corner Roads, coming to rest on its side with fuel spilling out. The driver sustained injuries of sufficient severity to warrant transport to Akron General Hospital. About 100 gallons of fuel spilled onto the ground before it was shut off. The truck was emptied and removed by private contractors. Ohio EPA was advised and arrived on scene to coordinate the cleanup, which was done by a private contractor. The park and Akron PD are conducting a joint investigation, with the latter leading the effort and the NPS assessing the cleanup efforts and working on cost recovery.
