With the sound of a starterâs cannon echoing throughout Fort Wadsworth, Gateway NRA hosted the start of the 2008 New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 2nd.
Thirty eight thousand runners from over 100 different countries ran the 26.2 mile course that winds its way through New York Cityâs five boroughs.
For nearly a year, the park worked with the eventâs organizers, the New York Road Runners, to ensure a smooth start to the race as Gateway again played host to the largest sporting event in New York City. In the days prior to the race, park staff also publicized the National Park System at the Marathonâs pre-race Health and Fitness Expo held at the Javits Convention Center in Manhattan.
