Zion Spring Water – The New Green Thing

Americans use about 50 billion plastic water bottles yearly, and about 38 billion end up in landfills.  If laid end to end, those bottles would circle the equator 217 times!  Zion’s Green Team, in an effort to help reduce plastic waste, spearheaded an effort to encourage visitors to use refillable bottles instead.  In coordination with its partners, the Zion Natural History Association and Xanterra Concessions, Zion has created a program to sell affordable, reusable bottles while providing “Zion Spring Water” filling stations that visitors can use free of charge at three main stopping points – Zion Visitor Center, Zion Human History Museum, and Zion Lodge.

All three filling stations also serve as exhibits, giving visitors information about the impact of disposable bottles, as well as the safety and purity of Zion’s water and the importance of staying hydrated, especially in a desert. 

Developing a program to reduce disposable plastic water bottle use will not only help the environment, but will serve as an example for others.  Through this effort, Zion hopes to further sound stewardship practices and inspire visitors to follow our environmental commitment by reducing plastic waste as one step to reduce litter, landfill, and our dependence on foreign oil.
