Walla Valley Fire Update: This will be the last update unless there are changes to report or until managers declare the fire out.

Fire Started: June 21, 2008 as a prescribed burn project June 25, 2008 converted to a wildfire

Location: North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park. The Walla Valley Fire is located in the Walla Valley and Point Sublime area, approximately 9 miles west of the North Rim developed area.

Fuels: Gamble oak, ponderosa pine, mixed conifer, grass

Size: 450 acres; Percent Contained: 60%

Resources committed: 3 fire use modules and support personnel. Total personnel = 25

Closures: Sections of the W4 and W1 roads remain closed until further notice.

Summary: Firefighters have completed containment line on the Walla Valley Fire from Kanabownits Cabin to Galahad Point. Some uncontained perimeter is below the rim on the north and south sides of the fire. These areas are inaccessible to firefighters. Aircraft dropped water and retardant in these locations to stop fire spread. The fire has been inactive for three days and there is low potential for future growth. There will be a little smoke from time to time as vegetation inside the perimeter continues to smolder. Resources are being released from the Walla Valley Fire for reassignment to other incidents. The perimeter of the fire is within the boundaries of the Walla Valley Prescribed burn unit.

Air Quality: There are no smoke impacts at this time.

Fire Behavior: Some smoldering inside the fire perimeter.

Weather: The general weather forecast is partly cloudy, temperatures in the 80’s, light winds 8 to 12 miles per hour with a chance of afternoon thunderstorms.
