Independence NHP Gains Publicity from PA Primaries

Independence National Historical Park

National Park News

With the Pennsylvania primaries playing such an important role in determining the democratic presidential candidate, Philadelphia – and Independence NHP – has been in the media spotlight.  Independence NHP hosted both Democratic Party candidates over the past two weeks.  On Wednesday, April 16, Senators Clinton and Obama held a debate at the National Constitution Center on Independence Mall.  On Friday, April 18, Senator Obama held a rally on Independence Mall, the largest public event ever held on Independence Mall.  From April 21 – 23, Independence Hall provided a historic backdrop for a large number of local, national and international media who broadcast live from the park throughout the days leading up to and following the primaries.

While the park benefitted from significant extra publicity and media attention from these events, the most entertaining component of the extra publicity was the participation of Interpretive Ranger Joe Chauncy on the “Colbert Report”.  Known for his irreverence and willingness to cross every line, Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert spent the week from April 14 – 17 broadcasting live from Philadelphia.  On Saturday, April 12, Colbert came to Independence NHP, where he was given a special tour by Joe Chauncy.  Joe did a great job of not only educating Stephen Colbert, but also answering all of his (sometimes bizarre) questions.  Thanks to Joe, the park was highlighted in several episodes of the show over the course of the week.  Park management believes this publicity will raise awareness of the park and the momentous historic events that happened here – and hopes that no one else will ask to lick the Liberty Bell!
