On Tuesday March 25, 2008, Nez Perce National Historical Park played host to five regional university presidents. The presidents of the University of Idaho (UI), Washington State University (WSU), Lewis-Clark State College (LCSC) North Idaho College and Northwest Indian College pledged to offer more opportunities to Native Americans by agreeing to share information between the schools and increase recruitment and retention of American Indians attending the schools. "One of the most important things you're going to hear today from the following institutions is how they're going to share their resources together," Samuel N. Penney, chairman of the Nez Perce Tribal Executive Committee, told a crowd of more than 100 who gathered at the Spalding site of Nez Perce National Historical Park. Members of the Nez Perce, Coeur d'Alene and Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Reservation also attended the signing. The agreement will make it easier for American Indian students to take classes at branch sites and make it easier to satisfy graduation requirements.
