On the evening of Sunday February 17, 2008, the United States Park Police was notified of a critically missing person from the Frederick Douglass Visitor Center. The missing subject was part of a locally sponsored group on a trip to the Frederick Douglass Home and Visitor Center. The missing visitor, a mentally handicapped adult male, was not adequately dressed for the impending cold weather. The male was last seen by his group at about 4:00 p.m.
U.S. Park Police officers conducted a thorough search of the Douglass Visitor Center and surrounding area. The U.S. Park Police “Eagle” helicopter responded to provide aerial support for the search. A command post involving the Metropolitan Police Department and the local group was established. U.S. Park Police Officer Samuel Karns was able to locate the missing person at a nearby restaurant in good condition. He was soon reunited with his group.
