Topeka, KS - Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site, in conjunction with the Brown Foundation for Educational Equity, Excellence and Research and the Kansas City Aviation Department, will pay tribute to Brown v. Board of Education NHS during the month of February as part of the Black History Month celebration. Superintendent Dennis Vasquez announced, "We have developed an exhibit to encourage people to visit the historic site."
Special displays highlighting the historic site are located in enclosed glass display cases beneath the mezzanine staircases in the three terminals at the Kansas City International Airport. The locations are near Gate 8 in Terminal A, near Gate 38 in Terminal B and near Gate 87 in Terminal C.
Brown v. Board of Education NHS commemorates the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education that ended legalized segregation in public schools. This landmark decision highlights the Supreme Court's role in affecting changes in national and social policy. The park interprets the case of Brown within the context of slavery, the Civil War, Consitutional law, Reconstruction and the Civil Rights Movement. The lessons of Brown far transcend the realm of public education to include the fundamental principles of opportunity, inclusion, decency, and human rights. Vasquez stated, "We invite visitors to the Kansas City area to take a short drive to Topeka to learn more about the Brown story."
The national park is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with no fee, excluding Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day. The National Park Service cares for special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage. For more information, please call (785) 354-4273 or visit www.nps.gov/brvb.
