Park Hosts Structural Fire Training Session

Big Bend National Park

National Park News

Over the period from December 4th to December 14th, Big Bend hosted an 80-hour driver/operator training course to certify structural fire engine operators. The course was sponsored by the Service’s structural fire program, based at NIFC.

The intensive course focused on fire ground water delivery, pumps and pump theory, and vehicle operation. The latter provided sufficient training for acquisition of commercial driver’s licenses (CDL’s). Participants also had to pass both written and timed practical tests.

During the final practical exercise, water drafted from the Rio Grande was relay pumped through four engines to create a 120-foot-high stream – to the astonishment of Mexican neighbors on the opposite shore.

The photo was taken at the conclusion of that exercise. Pictured are:

  • Front, kneeling: Joe Roberts, Marcos Paredes, Dave Yim, Reine Wonite, John Morlock, Alyssa Van Schmuss and Blake Trester, all members of Big Bend’s fire brigade.

  • Rear, standing: Tony Bacon, instructor; Mike Cole, Sequoia-Kings Canyon; Don Corrick, Big Bend; Dave Van Inwagen, Big Bend; Michael Ryan, Big Bend; Mark Spier, Big Bend; Lance Mattson, Big Bend; Tucker Amiotte, Badlands; Dillon Foster, Yosemite; Kyle Nelson, Sequoia-Kings Canyon; and Ron Glantz, instructor.
