Volunteer Recruitment and Training At Cowpens National Battlefield
If you enjoy being with people or like to work in the outdoors, Cowpens National Battlefield could use your help. The national park is looking for volunteers to greet visitors and provide information about the Revolutionary War and the Upstate region. On Saturday, October 27, 2007, Cowpens National Battlefield will host training and orientation for new volunteers at the park’s Visitor Center from 9:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Cowpens National Battlefield is recruiting volunteers to assist with staffing the Visitor Center information desk, helping to organize and put on special events and maintaining park trails. Duties will include greeting and orienting park visitors, organizing and stocking the park bookstore and operating a cash register. Light trail maintenance and patrols would be along the park’s two mile nature trail and historic battlefield walk. Other duties would be identified based on abilities and interests.
The training will cover job requirements and expectations, history of the National Park Service and Cowpens National Battlefield, and an overview of park operations. At the end of the training, volunteers will have the opportunity to schedule their hours for November. Please bring a bag lunch.
A time commitment of 16 hours per month for 6 months would be required. The park may be able to reimburse volunteers for mileage. Volunteers would be required to wear a uniform and possess a valid driver’s license. Please call Rhonda Gossett at 864-461-2828 for more information and to sign up for this training.
Cowpens National Battlefield is located 3 miles east of Chesnee, 10 miles west of Gaffney, and 17 miles north of Spartanburg at the intersection of Highways 110, 11, and 221-A. For more information on park activities and events, call (864) 461-2828, or visit the park website at www.nps.gov/cowp/.
