Park Hydrologist Featured in History Channel Program

Carlsbad Caverns National Park

National Park News

The History Channel will air the program Journey to the Center of the World: Sacred Cave of the Maya, on June 25, at 10 p.m. Eastern time. The show features a team of three experts exploring Naj Tunich, one of the most sacred caves in the Mayan World and one that contains some of the most spectacular Mayan paintings in Central America. The team explores the history of the cave and pushes down a deep and treacherous unexplored pit in search of evidence of the ancient Maya. One of the team is Carlsbad Caverns National Park hydrologist Paul Burger. Paul, a long-time cave explorer and cave geology expert, helped document the cave and push beyond the pit.

Paul has been exploring caves for more than twenty years and has authored the books Cave Exploring and Deep Secrets: The Discovery and Exploration of Lechuguilla Cave.
