For the first time ever on May 6, 2007, visitors to Friendship Hill National Historic Site will be able to see the historic Albert Gallatin home furnished with and entire houseful of furniture from General Robert E. Lee's mansion.
For the next few years, Friendship Hill will be home to the furnishings from Arlington House. Site of the Robert E. Lee Memorial, the mansion at Arlington House in Virginia will receive extensive rehabilitation by the National Park Service. While the work is underway, most of the mansion's 3,300 objects will be placed on temporary display. Gallatin House is normally displayed without furnishings.
Gallatin was Secretary of the Treasury and living in Washington, D.C. when the Arlington House was built in 1802. Friendship Hill was Gallatin's home from 1789-1824.
Storing the Arlington House collection at Friendship Hill National Historic Site will save approximately $200,000 per year in museum storage costs.
