Arrests For Theft, Illegal Dumping

Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve

National Park News

On Tuesday, April 9th, rangers on patrol saw some unidentifiable objects in Bayou Coquille in the Barataria Unit and contacted the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office dispatched its LASER (Land-Air-Sea-Emergency Rescue) unit to investigate. Divers from that team recovered several computers and related equipment, all of which had been stolen during a burglary at nearby Ellender Middle School in Marrero, Louisiana. Arrests were made shortly thereafter – eight males and females, ranging in age from 13 to 20 years old. Two of the people arrested admitted to dumping stolen items in the park. Federal charges will be pursued for illegal dumping into a waterway. The sheriff’s office has filed burglary, obstruction and contributing to the delinquency charges against those arrested. Ranger Michael Callais is the case agent.
