Although the severe nor’easter that struck the East Coast on Sunday and Monday moved a substantial amount of sand along the south shore of Long Island, it appears at present that damage to park facilities and resources has not been significant. Piping plovers, which have been in the area for about a month, have not yet begun to nest, so have not been seriously affected. Seventeen preexisting communities lie within the boundaries of the park. Several oceanfront homes within those communities have been threatened, as more than 30 feet of sand was eroded from the beach in many places. High surf also cut into the dunes and caused overwash in a number of locations. Park management is involved in working collaboratively with the Corps of Engineers and with state, county, and local agencies to address mutual concerns and issues related to shoreline protection.
