During the early morning hours of Saturday, February 10th, a Fayetteville City police officer discovered an abandoned vehicle on the New River Gorge Bridge and stopped to investigate. The officer spotted what appeared to be a body on the right bank of the river about 800 feet below. Rangers Sandy Shuck, Randy Fisher and Greg Malcolm responded along with state police, county officers, and fire, rescue and EMS units. The body was recovered and identified as that of a 22-year-old Fayetteville man. An investigation is underway, but all indications are that the death was a suicide.
