Park Volunteer Home Destroyed In Shekell Fire

The home of a Santa Monica Mountains NRA volunteer was destroyed in the Shekell fire on Sunday, December 3rd. She is a member of the Mounted Volunteer Patrol (MVP) that patrols park and California State Parks and Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority lands within the NRA boundary and provides assistance to park visitors. Her mother also lost her home, and a trailer containing all of the tack belonging to another MVP member was destroyed. All of the people and horses affected are safe.

The home of a park staff member is adjacent to a large warehouse which was also destroyed on December 3rd. The home was not harmed and all family members are safe.

The Shekell fire was 80% contained as of 8 a.m. on December 5th and firefighters expected to fully contain it by yesterday evening. A total of 18 homes and buildings were destroyed or damaged during the incident.
