Cactus Forest Drive, located within the Rincon Mountain District, reopened recently following completion of a $1.8 million dollar renovation project. The 8.5-mile-long scenic loop drive was closed for a five month period this past summer.
Cactus Forest Drive was originally built between 1937 and 1939 by the Civilian Conservation Corps and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The mostly one-way road had remained essentially unchanged since it was constructed. The project, funded through the Federal Highway Administration, included a complete resurfacing of the roadway, improved drainage at wash crossings, and paving and improved delineation of roadside parking areas. Twelve new interpretive wayside exhibits, funded by the Western National Parks Association and the Friends of Saguaro National Park, were also installed, and a new road guide, published by Western National Parks Association, was produced and is now available.
The project has significantly improved the auto and bicycle touring experience on Cactus Forest Drive and will enhance visitor opportunities to enjoy the beauty and character of Southern Arizona’s Sonoran Desert.
A grand reopening ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on October 28th. Superintendent Sarah Craighead opened the ceremony, and Rick Shireman, the general superintendent for Southern Arizona Group, representing the regional director, addressed the group. Dignitaries representing the Federal Highway Administration, Denver Service Center, Granite Construction, Western National Parks Association and the Friends of Saguaro National Park participated in the ceremony.
