San Francisco Maritime’s Aquatic Park Lagoon has been closed to swimming due to confirmed reports of a sea lion or seal biting local swimmers. Several swimmers were bitten in the lagoon between November 13th and 15th. Swimming will accordingly be restricted until more information about the animal can obtained.
On November 16th, park staff patrolled the lagoon in personal watercraft and small boats. One harbor seal was sighted, but no sea lions were seen. The harbor seal exhibited no aggressive behavior. The park will continue to monitor the area, and will make a determination on whether or not to allow the resumption of swimming based on the results.
Members of the park staff are consulting with marine mammal experts at the National Marine Fisheries Service and the California Marine Mammal Center.
