Take Pride in Acadia Day Volunteers Make A Difference

Acadia National Park

National Park News

More than 250 volunteers from near and far and from 8 to 80 turned up on Saturday, November 4th, for the 16th annual “Take Pride in Acadia Day” carriage road clean-up. On a sunny but cold morning, volunteers raked leaves from more than 13 miles of carriage roads. A feast of chili, cornbread, cider, and cake followed at park headquarters.

This annual event helps prepare the historic carriage roads, built by John D. Rockefeller Jr. between 1913 and 1940, for winter. Removing leaves and other woody debris from roads, ditches, and culverts helps prevent erosion due to rain, ice, and thaws during the coming winter and spring.

Several local businesses helped support the food, transportation, and other costs of “Take Pride in Acadia Day.” The annual event is sponsored by Friends of Acadia in partnership with Acadia National Park.
