On Saturday, September 16th, Senator Jim Jeffords (I-VT) unveiled a monument donated by the state of Vermont to the National Park Service at Wilderness Battlefield. The 20-ton monument commemorates the sacrifices of the Vermont Brigade during the battle of the Wilderness on May 5-6, 1864. Although Management Policies forbids new monuments on Civil War battlefields, the park’s legislation allows states to erect such memorials.
Along with the monument, the park dedicated two new parking areas and a trail with wayside exhbits, all funded by legislation spnsored by Senator Jeffords.
