For Harry Roman, it’s a natural. Moving from a career in Research and Development at New Jersey’s Public Service Electric and Gas to interpreting Thomas Edison’s life and times at Edison NHS was simply the next logical step. From the writing assignment in the 4th grade for which he wrote a letter to Thomas Edison Inc.’s Battery Division to his recent induction in the New Jersey Inventor’s Hall of Fame, Harry’s life has been entwined with innovation and a sincere reverence for the great inventor. Upon his retirement, his wife suggested that he “close the loop” by doing what he loves best – teaching kids about Thomas Edison, science and inventing. Living in nearby East Orange, what better place than the NPS site? Harry currently gives programs at the Glenmont estate, enthusiastically engaging adult and younger visitors alike in lively conversations about Edison family life. He received his 10th patent this past July 4, for a miniature “ear” that can hear the sound of an electrical arc inside of a transformer. Six of his 10 ten patents are for robotics, including “OTIS” – an Oil Tank Inspection System that roams tanks independently while it cleans and also senses for thin metal in the tank. Need to locate the thin metal? “OTIS” will provide you with a map! Harry believes in partnerships and will be expanding the Site’s education programs into the Newark, New Jersey school system – work he did in his former professional life will now be continued in his brand spanking new Stetson!
