Basket. Check. Buffalo berries. Check. Porcupine quills. Check.
Saturday, August 26, 2006, children ages three to five years old can help Knife River Indian Villages kick off its new program for children. The program, called the Knife River Explorer program, is a checklist of items that can be found within the park. Children complete the checklist and turn it in to receive a Knife River Explorer button and certificate.
The Knife River Explorer program was developed as a response to needing an educational program for younger visitors who were not old enough to read the questions and write the answers required for the Junior Ranger program. The checklist is simple and short enough to hold their interest, and is a way for them to get something out of their visit to the park.
Parents may bring their children to Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site, located ½ mile north of Stanton, on the morning of Saturday, August 26, at 10:30 a.m. Mountain Time. Ranger Amber Grannis will help them complete their checklist.
The park already has a program designed for older children ages six to twelve, the Junior Ranger program. Junior Rangers complete a booklet which is comprised of questions about everything from the earthlodge to the movie to Lewis and Clark. Older children ages 6-12 who have NOT completed the Junior Ranger program can also complete their booklet and receive their badge on August 26.
For more information, please contact the park at (701) 745-3300.
