Bluegrass Sounds of Hurly Ridge at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park

Cumberland Gap National Historical Park

National Park News

Like the changing of the guard, one season changes into another. Each season is uniquely different and made special by exciting and fun filled adventures, which are forever captured in memory. With the coming of the Labor Day Weekend, what better way to celebrate this annual transformation of the seasons than with a good old-fashioned foot stomping, knee smacking hoedown?

Join park rangers on Saturday, September 2, 2006 at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, for an evening of bluegrass music with Hurley Ridge. This family group of two brothers, Glenn and Kent Hurley, and a sister, Amy, grew up in Jackson County, Kentucky. Reared in a rural setting, they naturally were drawn to the old time bluegrass music they heard at family gatherings and community barn dances. At an early age, Amy mastered the bass; Glenn conquered the mandolin and guitar while Kent became proficient on the banjo and guitar. Their blend of modern and traditional tunes coupled with their unique style delights all ages. As Park Ranger Amy Wilson explains, “When listening to this family band, you can’t keep your feet still. They truly capture the essence of the bluegrass sound.”

The National Park Service and Eastern National, a non-profit park partner, will sponsor this free program. The program begins at 8:00 p.m. at the Wilderness Road Campground Amphitheater at the end of loop C located two miles east of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee on Virginia Highway 58. In case of rain, meet at the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park visitor center. For information on this and other ranger programs, contact park staff at 606-248-2817, extension 1075.
