The Life and Times of Gen. George Pickett Returns to San Juan Island

San Juan Island National Historical Park

National Park News

Many of the re-enactors who are on the island for the weekend will appear in costume at San Juan Community Theatre on Friday, August 27, when National Parks Ranger and historian Michael Vouri will reprise his acclaimed one-man historical drama, The Life and Times of General George Pickett, at 8:00 p.m.

Vouri’s play has been praised by the Pickett Society for its precision and superb detail.

“Having read numerous biographies of George E. Pickett written by well-known authors, and having been disappointed by the incorrect information in each of them,” Pickett Society president Pat Wood said, “I was unprepared to see the accuracy and historical fact in the script of Mike's play. The Life and Times of George Pickett is unequivocally the best biography of George E. Pickett.”

Moreover, the play is a moving account of the variety of events, both historic and tragic, that shaped Pickett’s life, including his experience as commander of the U.S. forces on San Juan Island during the Pig War. Vouri tells the story in the folksy and humorous way that Pickett – who was known by his West Point classmates as quite a joker – very well might have.

This performance is sponsored by Roche Harbor Village. Tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for student reserved. $5 Student RUSH will be available at the door. A private donor has made provision for free tickets to anyone needing financial assistance to attend a Theatre event. The SJCT Box Office is open Tuesday-Friday, 11-4, Saturdays 11-2, and one hour before any performance. Call 360-378-3210, or go to www.SanJuanCommunityTheatre.org.
