Knife River Indian Villages NHS Announces “A Fond Farewell”

Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site

National Park News

Knife River Indian Villages will host a special event August 16, 2006. The event, “A Fond Farewell,” commemorates the 200th anniversary of the homeward departure of Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery to St. Louis from the Hidatsa and Mandan villages.

Several activities will take place throughout the day. At 3:00, Stanton postmaster Jodene Brown will have a postal cancellation at Knife River Indian Villages. People interested may bring their own envelopes, or envelopes will be available to cancel.

Beginning at 6:00 p.m., Knife River Indian Villages presents several speakers. Dick Boss will portray George Shannon, the youngest member of the Lewis and Clark expedition. Dick is an interpreter with the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls, Montana. At 6:45, Amy Mossett will present, “Legacies of Lewis and Clark.” Amy is a nationally recognized scholar on Sakakawea. At 7:30, Gerard Baker will present, “The Mandan and Hidatsa Since Lewis and Clark.” Gerard is the superintendent of Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota.

A special exhibit will be displayed August 13 through Labor Day. A series of three quilts, entitled “Lewis and Clark in the Bitterroots,” “Lewis and Clark on the Upper Missouri,” and “Lewis and Clark to the Pacific,” depict different locations on the Lewis and Clark expedition. The quilts were created by Stanton resident Judy Wieger.

All events are free and all times are Mountain Daylight Time. For more information, please contact the park at (701) 745-3300.
