(FLAT ROCK, NC)— Plans for a new restroom at Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site are actively progressing. The existing trailer restroom located near the historic home will be demolished beginning August 21. A new restroom facility will be built on the same site later this fall. As the work progresses, several portable toilets and a hand washing station will be available adjacent to the site.
The trailer restroom was installed when the park opened to the public in 1974, and planning for its replacement was included in the park’s General Management Plan that was completed in 2003. Since that time, drawings and specifications were prepared by the National Park Service’s Southeast Regional Office in Atlanta.
During demolition and construction, the area will be fenced off for visitor safety. The restroom located near the visitor parking lot will remain open during the project.
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site is located three miles south of Hendersonville off U.S. 225 on Little River Road. The park is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., daily, except Christmas Day. Scheduled guided tours of the home cost $5.00 each for adults and are free for those age 16 and under. The grounds are free of charge with hiking trails, a goat barn, picnic area and bookstore.
