Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Chief of Heritage Education Gregg Bruff reminds visitors and area residents that there are two remaining special access days for mobility impaired individuals to the Au Sable Light Station within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The remaining Saturdays are August 12 and 26 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
“Our first Saturday of special access was very successful,” Bruff said. “We had about 20 folks who would have not been able to walk to the lighthouse show up and take advantage of the special transportation we have arranged with Altran. Ranger David Kronk was there to offer special tours and discuss the history of the Light Station. It was a great day.”
“We are very grateful that Altran has partnered with us this summer to offer this service. We recognize that not everyone can walk to the Lighthouse, so we are trying this new service this summer. If it is a success, we will consider making this a regular part of our summer program,” Bruff said.
Visitors who wish to take the van to the lighthouse may either call Altran at 906-387-4845 for a reservation or meet the driver at the lower Hurricane River Campground parking area. Round trip fee for transportation is $2.50. Lighthouse tours will be offered for a fee of $2.00 per person.
Due to some problems with seasonal hiring, regular weekly tours of the lighthouse will not be held this summer. In the meantime, the lakeshore is very pleased to offer this Saturday service in August and encourages everyone to come out any time this summer to visit this wonderful portion of the national lakeshore.
As part of the Lakeshore’s 40th Anniversary, Au Sable Day is again scheduled for Saturday, September 30. Altran will be providing the shuttle service that day as well. Au Sable Day includes tours of the light station, maritime music by local performer Carl Behrend, and the unveiling of the new maritime museum in the head keepers quarters.
